Abstract
In today’s culture there are many different genres of music that require various stage settings, acoustical properties, type and amount of seating arrangements as well as various electrical or sound amplification requirements, but in spite of it all being music, there are no acoustically universal performance halls. The musical experience of particular sounds such as rock, rap, metal or country have been relegated to places not suited for musical performances such as hockey arenas, stadiums or all-sport field houses, and yet only musical genres such as classical or opera are considered for suitable acoustics and technologies when considering performance areas. This thesis focuses on scientifically producing a performance hall that can be adapted to fit the acoustical needs of whatever performance that is to take place. The research analyzes performance hall precedents, the economics of a performance hall, the science of acoustics and the historical and cultural background of various genres of music.
