Abstract Details

2006, MEd, University of Cincinnati, Education : Health Promotion and Education.
The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived confidence level of high school coaches in rural, Northwest Ohio in their ability to handle various injuries and illnesses involving their student-athletes. Previous studies had shown that coaches performed poorly when tested on first aid knowledge even when they reported attending previous first aid training. The participants for this study consisted of high school coaches from rural, Northwest Ohio who were at least 18 years old. The participants coached Ohio High School Athletic Association sanctioned sports at the freshman, junior varsity, or varsity level during the 2005-2006 school year. For this study, 15 question survey that assessed the perceived confidence of a high school coach in their ability to act as a first responder to various injuries and illnesses was used. The injuries and illnesses ranged from minor, non-life threatening to major, life-threatening conditions. Several statistical tests were run to determine average confidence levels for each situation and also to investigate the factors of coaching experience, coaching rank (head or assistant), and the gender of the coach. No significant relationship was found between confidence level and coaching rank or the gender of the coach. The researcher found a statistically significant relationship existed between years of coaching experience and perceived confidence level (r = .186, p = .023).
