K-Theory and Homotopy Type of Certain Infinite C*-Algebras

Let 0→B→E→A→0 be a short exact sequence of C*-algebras where A is a purely infinite simple C*-algebra and B is an essential closed ideal of E. In case that B is the compacts or a nonunital purely infinite simple C*-algebra we determine the homotopy groups of the unitary group of E in terms of the K-theory of E. The result can be viewed as a generalization of the Kuiper’s theorem to a new class of C*-algebras (including certain separable C*-algebras). As a consequence we determine the homotopy groups of the space projections of E in terms of K-theory. In the last part we investigate certain purely infinite simple C*-algebras that arise from the reduced C*-algebra of free products of cyclic groups and a projection. We describe them as a matrix algebra over the C*-algebra generated by the Cuntz algebra 𝓞 and some generalized bilateral shifts.
