SENSITIVE MATERIAL

Abstract Details

2007, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
Architecture has to be a sensual and intelligent medium, otherwise it's just boring. Jacques Herzog Quantification – of time, commodities, and production – embodies the culture of modern society. Yet the concept of quality, a description of atmosphere, remains vital to human experience. Interpretations of place – physical, intellectual, or emotional – depend upon perceptions. As described by Juhani Pallasmaa, architecture, through mediation by the senses, "is the art of reconciliation between ourselves and the world." In a consumerist society ripe with virtual and visual stimuli, environments often lack the qualities necessary to provoke multi-sensory experiences. This thesis specifically considers materiality as a critical investigation for connection to humanity, relating to culture and the body. It analyzes designs that innovate through materiality, defining several modes of intervention: atmosphere and episode, material manipulation, and serial production, for application to a natatorium in a Cleveland, Ohio suburb. Specific moments that are sensitive to atmosphere and effect choreograph movement through experience, providing relevant and stimulating engagement.
