Abstract Details

2007, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
The pressures of cultural and economic forces on architecture have created a cycle of construction and demolition that leads to a generic placeless environment. This thesis questions the affect of this accelerating cycle on placemaking and architectures ability to contribute to a continuity of place. Architecture must continue to improve durability and longevity as well as find methods for accepting and exploiting ephemerality. To address this topic, I have proposed a design for a seasonal boathouse on DuSable Park, a highly valued urban site at the mouth of the Chicago River. Specifically, I propose the hybridization of strategies for temporal spaces found in both artistic installations and adaptive architecture to perpetuate a sense of place. As a result of this thesis, an argument will be made for the design of site-specific temporary architecture as a tool for placemaking.
