Abstract
Dismissed as a mere resultant of constructed solids, the limitless potential of voids in buildings and urban spaces has often been overlooked in architectural discourse. Through a careful historical, semantic, and explorative investigation into concepts of space and void, this thesis seeks to refocus awareness to that which traditionally is forgotten or unobserved, altering user perception and heightening spatial experience through the inversion of preconceived notions of solid and void. Steeped in process, a design strategy is created to activate the void, informed and molded by the documentation and analysis of artists and architects, including Rachel Whiteread, Rem Koolhaas, Steven Holl, Bernard Tschumi, and Aldo van Eyck. An urban void located in the Backstage District of downtown Cincinnati is activated through a series of explorations presented in both drawings and physical models, and is supplemented with a graphic thesis document illustrating the completed research, precedents, and methodologies employed in the process. The result of the project reveals that the concept of “the void” is neither autonomous nor singular: Its existence is shaped by the presence of mass and skin; its subsistence is one of dynamic multiplicity. Never singular, voids come in many types, each defined by scale, spatial quality, functionality, and the process in which they are created.
