2007, M.M., University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music : Composition.
Architextures was written in response to three buildings I encountered on my road trip from Montana to Ohio in the summer of 2005. The first movement is exactly 3'30" long, corresponding with the time it takes for the large mechanical "wings" on top of the Milwaukee Art Museum to open. The art museum was designed by the famous spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The second movement attempts to depict the sterile laboratories and raucous nature of Frank Gehry's Vontz Center for Molecular Studies on the University of Cincinnati campus. Gehry has always considered himself outside of the academic world, and inside the popular culture. I tried to represent this vision with episodes reflecting my love of hard rock and heavy metal. The third movement is based on one of Frank Lloyd Wright's many masterpieces the Johnson Foundation's home and conference center, Wingspread. The movement is built around the flickering of a single pitch, much like the house is built around a central lantern-like structure. I use quotes from Bach, Mahler and the rock band Explosions in the Sky. Bach represents the monumental nature of Wright's work, Mahler represents the emotional depth of the house and Explosions in the Sky represent the desire for simple and elegant beauty that can be shared by all people. The composition was inspired by my emotional attachment to these buildings. My father is a builder, and I cannot help but feel a piece of home in all of these structures.
