Many people see cities as places of fear, poverty, crime, and pollution. Others observe those characteristics but recognize opportunities for vitality, diversity, and cultural stimulus. I believe that each city has a unique and creative potential hidden in its cracks, which I am determined to uncover. Many times that undiscovered potential is the people; we can be a city’s most valuable urban resource because we provide cleverness, desire, motivation, imagination, and creativity. This thesis explores strategies for creating an urban environment capable of generating and maintaining creativity and innovation that attracts people who prefer stimulating and vibrant environments in which to live, work, and play. In essence, the concepts of the “urban village” are employed to combine the qualities of a neighborhood and of an urban environment in order to bring a strong sense of community and identity to and urban development.
