Abstract
My dissertation consists of two parts: a creative dissertation that is a collection of short stories, and a critical introduction that examines the function of the Gothic in the literature of Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley. The creative section of my dissertation is titled “From the Ocean’s Edge,” after a story in the collection, and continues with nine additional stories that explore Gothic themes like obsession with the past, trauma, regret and identity transformation within a variety of American landscapes. The contents of the story collection begins with a short called “Moving Darkness” where a middle-aged women contemplates her unhappy marriage after surviving a vicious attack during a morning jog in Cincinnati, Ohio. “Moving Darkness” is followed by nine additional Gothic stories titled, “The AX,” “From the Ocean’s Edge,” “Sterling,” “Rim of the World,” “Seattle’s Best Neighborhood,” “Esplanade,” “Half-Hour Nirvana,” “Boulder,” and “Kauaian Sunset.” The critical section of my dissertation, titled “Desire for Fear: Feminine Abjection in Gothic Fiction of Mary Wollstonecraft” describes the functions of the Gothic genre, the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, and the related socio-historical context. The essay examines the psychological phenomena present in the author’s texts along with Kristeva’s theory of abjection. The analysis of Wollstonecraft’s work depicts the links between feminine identity and culture, and demonstrates an examination of the Gothic style during its initial manifestations in the late seventeenth century.
