This thesis, Introducing the Piano Music of Samuel Barber to the Undergraduate Piano Major, includes a biographical chapter about the composer followed by six chapters that chronologically examine all of Samuel Barber’s published solo piano works excluding his Sonata, Op. 26. These works include: “Love Song,” the first of Three Sketches; Interlude I, Op. Posthumous; four Excursions, Op. 20; six Souvenirs, Op. 28; Nocturne, Op. 33; and the Ballade, Op. 46. These fourteen piano works are leveled, then explored in three different but interrelated ways. Each composition is placed into an historical context so that the pianist might understand what influenced Barber’s compositional choices and how he adapted said compositional influences to his personal idiom. Barber’s compositions are then analyzed from a theoretical standpoint, examining what techniques he employed, and how, if at all, he modified them to suit his purposes. Finally, these works are examined from a pianistic standpoint, focusing on the various technical and musical demands the pianist may encounter, and how they might be addressed. Diagrams and musical examples are included as well as bibliographic information and two appendices leveling the piano works discussed. A final appendix explores Barber’s use of serialism and its implications in the Nocturne, Op. 33.
