Abstract
The Berkeley Pit is a gigantic former open pit copper mine located in Butte, Montana, and is considered as the largest Superfund site in U.S. This thesis presents the results of the development and design of a novel remediation process for metal production from Berkeley pit acid mine drainage utilizing a selective sequential precipitation (SSP) method. During this four precipitation batch method, copper/zinc, aluminum, iron, and manganese were precipitated as either sulfides or hydroxides, sequentially. The average metal removal rates of the SSP batch process were 90% and higher. In addition, recovery of copper/zinc, aluminum, iron, and manganese were maximized at pH values of 3, 5, 6.5, and 9.5, respectively. Purity percentages of 90% and higher were also obtained for all precipitates excluding aluminum. Furthermore, 25% of ferrous ion was synthesized as high value goethite (alpha-FeOOH) from Berkeley pit acid mine drainage. It is proposed that the developed selective sequential precipitation (SSP) batch system can be applied towards the treatment of Berkeley pit acid mine drainage.
