Abstract Details

This study was designed to evaluate similarities and differences between three brands of stannic chloride irritant smoke tubes designed for qualitative respirator fit testing, in particle size characterization and stability of smoke concentration delivery over time. The three brands of irritant smoke tubes used include Sensidyne, MSA and VeriFIT. Particle concentration of the irritant smoke produced by the three brands of smoke tubes was analyzed; the predominate size was in a range of 0.3-0.4 µm, this being significant different than (P <0.0001) any other size range. When performing qualitative fit testing using irritant smoke, the squeeze bulb delivery method produced particle counts that were statistically greater than the particle count produced by the low flow pump.
