A Multicausal Approach to the Etiology of Porotic Hyperostosis at Lerna

Abstract Details

J. Lawrence Angel ascribed thalassemia to all instances of porotic hyperostosis at Lerna. Research has since shifted away from a single-causal etiology of porotic hyperostosis toward one that is multifaceted, but there has been no attempt to revisit Angel's data in light of this change. This research examines Angel's descriptive data for skeletal markers of diseases other than thalassemia that are also known to be associated with anemia. Three case examples of anemia associated with spina bifida, chronic ear infection and severe dental disease are presented, focusing on the known link between infection, inflammation and anemia. The possibility that other forms of anemia existed at Lerna establishes the need to consider multiple causes of porotic hyperostosis. However, rather than disprove Angel's analysis, this research shows the continued utility and importance of Angel's data through application of methodologies developed decades later.
