Purpose: To date, no study has assessed how genetic services are provided over the
wide spectrum of medical specialties in a pediatric, tertiary healthcare setting
Methods: In-person interviews were conducted with 30 physicians, nurses or PhDs at
one Midwest pediatric medical center using a semi-structured interview guide.
Results: Participants recognized an important role for genetic conditions and genetic
services in their clinical practice and many reported providing genetic services directly to
their patients. Numerous barriers to accessing genetic services were identified, including
logistical issues of genetic testing, psychological and financial barriers of patients, and
knowledge of health care professionals. Additional services desired indicated the need
for further integration of genetic services into pediatric healthcare specialty clinics.
Conclusion: Results provided evidence supporting a team approach to genetic services.
