Cherry, Shannon Marie

Abstract Details

2008, MA, University of Cincinnati, Allied Health Sciences : Speech-Language Pathology.
The purpose of the project was to assess the role of genetics within the practice of speech-language pathologists as well as the information asked of clients/patients regarding genetics/family history. Three hundred randomly selected members of the Ohio Speech-Language Hearing Association were asked to complete an online survey addressing genetics and genetics research (11 items) via Survey Monkey. In addition, participants were asked to submit any case history questionnaires currently used in their practice for review of family history and genetic inheritance information. Speech-language pathologists across the state of Ohio are not uniformly asking questions to explore the possibility of inherited communication disorders in a client’s family. Ohio speech-language pathologists would benefit from education and training to be able to incorporate genetics information into their practice.
