Abstract Details

Historic preservation is more than restoration or conservation. Adaptiveuse is a form of preservation that is more commonly utilized because it gives a new purpose to the historic structure, justifying its continued existence. This allows for changes to the structure for functionality, while protecting what is historically important. Preservation parallels sustainability because every preservation project has the opportunity to become a sustainable project; by making use of an existing building instead of building a new one, there is less of a drain on the resources of the planet. The LEED program has developed new guidelines for existing buildings that are meant to help improve the performance of the building. This study will look into the adaptive use of Linwood Elementary School as a community and recreation center to benefit the community, and include sustainable techniques to improve the performance of the structure.
