Activating Architecture Through Movement

DRITZ, EMILY L.

Abstract Details

2008, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
Movement, the primary activator of space, can be comprehended as the 'glitch' in architecture: an uncontrollable event existing when organic flows of moving bodies occur contrastingly within a prescribed framework of the static constructed environment. Allowance for this occurrence is imperative as the intermediary vehicle between body and space is architecture. Constraining physical capabilities of the body must be resolved in order to establish reciprocating relationships between users of space and the space itself. The extent of the architect's role is limited in connecting the corporeal and the constructed: only the circumstances surrounding this event can be predicted. Exploration of the interdependencies of play and experience questions the association between the body and the built environment on multiple levels. Works by Bernard Tschumi and the OuLiPo inform the investigation of the architectural implications of employing constraints and the necessity of play, resulting in the fertile ground of the glitch.
