The main focus of the work described in this thesis is to develop support for virtual experiments in systems biology in order to help biologists make choices about which wet lab experiments are likely to be the most informative, thereby saving both time and material resources. Understanding biological pathways is important for increasing our understanding of various diseases, such as cancer, and our ability to develop bio-engineered drugs to combat these diseases. A secondary goal is to support synthetic biology in general by providing tools which can be employed by biologists, engineers, and computational scientists. In particular, this work supports a previously developed algorithm, the box algorithm, for simulating a biological pathway and performing virtual experiments on it. We develop a bio-control database for algorithms such as the box algorithm, which focus on control of biological pathways. To demonstrate the working of our database, we develop a new use case for the box algorithm by studying the Wnt signaling pathway and showing how we can increase the concentration of APC*/Axin*/gsk-3, which is important in reducing the size of certain cancerous tumors.
