Predicting Reaction Time from Temporal Performance Indicators on a Go/No-Go Task in Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Greater variability in reaction time (RT) among children with ADHD compared to normal controls has been a repeated finding. Recent studies investigating this phenomenon have found significant differences between groups on measures of skewness, indicating that children with ADHD had RT distributions that were positively skewed compared to normal controls. The differences in skewness may be related to different responses to performance events. Based on the evidence that children with ADHD and normal controls respond differently to events such as errors, this study investigated the performance events in a Go/No-Go task as potential predictors of RT for the purpose of identifying differential effects between groups. The two groups consisted of an ADHD sample (n = 65) and matched sample of normal controls (n = 65) from the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD and analyzed in the study on skewness by Hervey et al. (2006). Using generalized linear mixed modeling, reaction time was modeled as a function of the four possible performance events in a Go/No-Go task: errors (omission and commission), trials of successful inhibition, and number of consecutive successful Go trials. Most of the events selected predicted RT across both groups, but they generally did not predict differential performance between groups. The absence of interactions between the predictors and group suggest that the performance indicators affected RT similarly across ADHD and normal control groups. Explanations to consider include the possibility that long RTs cannot be predicted from task parameters but may be better explained by other variables such as those related to internal physiological mechanisms.
