Cadmium: a xenohormone present in the Rotterdam watershed and its potential influence on foetal femoral development

This thesis evaluates the possibility for reduced osteological development in foetal femora caused by chronic exposure to aqueous concentrations of cadmium. Data from a Dutch growth study is used to assess environmental and individual variables that could contribute to reduced osteological growth during foetal development. In the analysis, a matched-pair cohort method is used to compare exposed and control individuals with the intention of observing size differences for trends relating to cadmium exposure. Conclusions concerning municipal and governmental regulation of cadmium pollution are addressed as well as long-term suggestions for revision of public policy regarding accepted tolerance levels for metalloestrogens.
