The purpose of this study is to identify and quantify land cover changes over a 20-year period in four protected sites (parks) in southern Ohio that range across an urban-to-rural gradient. The analysis will provide an example of using remotely sensed imagery in combination with GIS to quantify where and how change in land cover has occurred. Landsat 5 imagery from 1988 and 2008 were classified into five land cover categories using a supervised classification algorithm within ENVI 4.4. The classified scenes were exported into ArcGIS 9.2 for further analysis. In order to determine differentiating characteristics just outside the park boundary, a 5-km buffer was created around each of the four study areas. Individual graphs were created to compare land cover transitions within the study area and the associated buffered study area. Results indicate minimal change between land cover transitions within study areas compared to the buffered study areas. There are also minimal changes between the land cover transitions located within an urban environment such as the Benedict study area and in the buffered Benedict study area. This is also true in the rural environment such as the Edge of Appalachia study area and in the Edge of Appalachia buffered study area where there is minimal change between land cover transitions. Land cover transitions from “agriculture” to “residential / transitional” were evident in buffered study areas in close proximity to Cincinnati or nearby cities. Within each of the study areas, “no change forest” is the dominant class. Depending on the local environment such as urban or rural, the buffered study areas do vary significantly in transition classes.
