Abstract
The current study examines the importance of the race of an observer in the assessment of family interaction in African American families. 32 behavioral scales were used to rate four African American families who were all participating in the same standardized task. The family interactions were videotaped and observed by 134 African American and Caucasian observers. The items were grouped into adaptive and dysfunctional ratings by an expert panel. It was hypothesized that observers from a different ethnic group (i.e. White observers) will rate the African American families higher on the dysfunctional scale but not on the adaptive scale than observers from the same ethnic group (i.e. African Americans). Results of the MANOVA showed no significant difference in scores between African American or Caucasian observers. This study uses Generalizability Theory (GT) as a method for examining the cultural bias in clinical observation and family assessment research. Results of the GT analysis revealed that Race was not a significant source of variability among the ratings. Suggestions about the interpretation of the study findings and possibilities for future research are provided.
