Abstract
Alloys based on Mo-Si-B ternary system are of great interest for very high temperature structural applications. Although having excellent oxidation resistance and strength at high temperature, the system still faces many challenges to be successful, among which deformation behavior is one of most important. In this research project, Mo-20Si-10B (at.%) alloy was processed such as to yield varying α-Mo volume fractions (from 5 to 46%), with the balance made up of Mo

phases. The constant strain rate compressive deformation tests at 1200, 1300 and 1400°C were performed at strain rates of 10

. The results showed that the stresses required to maintain a given strain rate increased with a decrease in temperature and decreased with an increase in the α-Mo volume fraction at any given temperature. The values of the stress exponents determined from the data ranged from ~3-9, depending on temperature and volume fraction of α-Mo; the activation energy for creep was found to be in the range of ~200-600 kJ/mol depending on stress level and volume fraction of α-Mo. These results were correlated with SEM and TEM observations of the damage processes, deformation structures and deformation mechanisms. Deformation models were discussed with associated mechanism and test data.
