Abstract
This work describes fabrication and characterization of stratified arrays of needle-type oxidation reduction potential sensors. The sensors were fabricated by wet etching glass probes using the principle of meniscus etching, where the balance of forces between the surface tension and the weight of the etchant meniscus determine the final shape of the sensor tip. The self-terminatedmeniscus etch process yields arrays of uniform electrode tips and shape. The stratified electrode arrays were fabricated by manipulating the meniscus profiles along the array by introducing a sacrificial spacer near array edge (“edge guide”). In this work, the effect of the “edge guide” on the shape of meniscus around array probes, and thus ultimately the shape of the sensor microelectrode tips, was investigated. Arrays of four oxidation reduction potential (ORP) sensors were fabricated with controlled electrode-to-electrode stratification on the order of 30-300 μm. ORP functionality of the fabricated sensors was characterized using standard ASTM methods. The stratified needle-type sensors exhibited performance comparable to that of the conventional needle-type sensors and commercial electrodes. The developed sensors were applied to measurement of ORP microprofiles in a biofilm.
