Abstract
Wireless sensors networks (WSN's) provide ubiquitous and distributed sensing of data for a single or multiple phenomenon. Wireless sensor device is generally small in size and is cost effective. These characteristics of a WSN are ideal for use in determining boundary of phenomenon in different scenarios. However,often such boundaries are camouflaged or covered by cloud, fog, heavy forest, orsmoke. For example, the use of modern tanks and different types of explosives frequently cause a cloud of smoke in the battlefield which tends to disperse in a wider area. From the strategic point of view, it is important to determine the accurate region of on-ground actions which are hidden from sophisticated satellite data or areal pictures. Here, we propose an approximation method of determining the minimum number of sensors to cover a given percentage ofthe boundary of the phenomena. The approximated model of the problem is mapped to filling n bins problem which is solved by a Markov chain with an absorption state. Then, we solve the problem for two specific sensor deployment distributions: uniform and Gaussian. We obtain closed form solution for uniform distribution and a simple solution for the Gaussian case. We validate our solutions with extensive simulation results and investigate the accuracy of our approximated model. Our results can be used as a lower bound for an actual sensor deployment for boundary detection and provide valuable information for other statistical simulations related to the boundary estimation.
