The 2009 excavations that were carried out at Group B, Say Kah, a small courtyard group composed of eight mounds, presented an ideal context for exploring and critiquing the indices by which Classic Maya middle level settlements are defined. As part of the Program for Belize Archaeological Project’s regional approach to Maya archaeology, this thesis uses primarily ceramic data to conduct comparative research of two middle level settlements, focusing on the diachronic interpretation of ceramic data in terms of courtyard activities and sociopolitical organization. More specifically, the 2009 ceramic data were combined with ceramic data collected at Group A, Say Kah by Dr. Brett Houk in years prior (Houk et al. 2005, Houk et al. 2006, Houk et al. 2007) as part of an effort to discuss sociopolitical reorganization during the Classic Period and the corollary material markers used to discuss sociopolitical status. In addition, the ceramic data from Say Kah were juxtaposed with ceramic data collected at Las Abejas, another middle level settlement in the Three Rivers Region, by Dr. Lauren Sullivan (1997) in order to better grasp the materialization of middle level settlements in the Classic Maya archaeological record within the Three Rivers Region. The comparative research exposed the weaknesses of strictly hierarchical interpretive models, namely, their inability to encompass the complexity of elite/non elite boundaries among the Classic Maya.
