Reappropriating the Light Wood Frame

Abstract Details

2010, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
Buildings are composed of industrially made components assembled in typical construction systems. Of these, light wood framing is the most prevalent, ubiquitous, and anonymous. Arranged into a balloon frame or the more contemporary platform frame, the typical construction is covered by various aesthetic images; the cladding is indifferent to what it is attached. Additionally, the neutral platform frame is anchored to the ground by a foundation. Modifications made to the light wood frame construction system often increase environmental, architectural, economic, and tectonic performance. For this thesis research, work of various architects is analyzed to understand and develop a catalogue of reappropriation or manipulation technique. From the analysis of this work, three relationships and opportunities within emerge. First is the concept of material counterpoints, the second is the connection between structure and envelope, and the third is the spatial character resulting from construction. The three relationships and precedent research will be explored in the design for the UC Rowing Club shellhouse sited south of Cincinnati on the Licking River.
