Abstract
A anaerobic / anoxic fluidized bed bioreactor containing granular activated carbon (GAC) as attachment media was operated in series with an aerobic activated sludge reactor to test the removal of 2,4 Dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), 2,6-Dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP) and 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) from wastewater from aniline manufacturing process. When the fluidized bed reactor was operated under methanogenic by providing ethanol as a substrate 2,4-DNP, 2,6-DNP, and 2,4,6-TNP were removed below detection limits at 20% strength of wastewater. At 40% strength wastewater, removal efficiency of 2,4-DNP, and TNP was more than 99.9% and 99% respectively. 2,6-DNP was not detected in the effluent at this stage. At 60% strength wastewater, the anaerobic reactor failed. With acectic acid as the primary substrate, denitrifying conditions were maintained in the fluidized bed reactor. Under denitrifying conditions, 2,4-DNP, 2-6DNP and TNP were not removed by the fluidized bed reactor.
