Abstract
This document seeks to provide a performer’s guide to the songs of the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909). He completed thirty songs throughout his life; however, scholars and performers have neglected his vocal repertoire. Moreover, the lack of available sources until recently and several publication problems have clearly limited the diffusion of Albéniz’s songs. This document revives these works through a deeper understanding of the composer, his life, his influences, and his time. Chapter one will summarize Albéniz’s biography, paying important attention to the places where he lived, his education, and his friendships. Chapter two will concentrate on Albéniz’s Spanish Songs and his settings of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer’s poetry. Chapter three will focus on his Italian Songs and explain how they are a product of the Italian influence on Spanish music in the 19th century. Chapter four will give attention to the French songs and the Wagnerian influence on Albéniz as well as his connection to the French Mélodie. Chapter five will discuss Albéniz’s English songs, and his relationship with Francis Money-Coutts, the songs’ poet. Chapter six will concentrate on his four last songs, Quatre Mélodies, which represent his mature style as a song composer.
