Abstract
In an ambiguous global business world, leaders face an unavoidable dilemma: they cannot predict the future, but to be ahead of their competitors, they have to forecast the future and devise strategies in response to their predictions. After identifying and selecting the most strategically appropriate trends, innovators need to give meaning to those trends. My thesis will use three first-hand experience case studies, the Solo Cup Project, the Mobility Device Studio and the P and G Denture Studio to explore how designers use trends to develop successful concepts that will influence other products and change people’s lifestyles. Through comparing design tasks, processes, mind-sets and team dynamics, I will outline my suggestions to help designers effectively transfer trends into design concepts.
