As the United States works to find solutions to rising healthcare costs, there has been an increasing focus on tying payment for medical care to quality measures. However, little is known about which factors have the most impact on high-quality health outcomes. Moreover, research suggests that United States citizens do not consistently receive high-quality care from their healthcare system. Minorities are particularly likely to not receive all recommended processes of care and often experience a greater disease burden than non-Hispanic whites. To better understand what particular components of chronic health management most impact health outcomes in a national sample of individuals with diabetes (n= 516), regression models were constructed for relevant physiological outcomes. This study found that few variables are consistent predictors of good physiological outcomes in individuals with diabetes, and that few racial and ethnic disparities in diabetes outcomes are found after controlling for other variables. Further work needs to be done to better understand which components of chronic illness management best predict positive outcomes to inform policymakers as the focus on high-quality healthcare continues.
