Abstract Details

2010, MDES, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Design.
Creating concepts that match people’s experiences, as expressed through their emotions and dreams, can play an important role in an innovation process for new product development, which can then translate into potential business opportunities. This master’s thesis demonstrates a new product development process, aiming at identifying an exceptional, pleasurable experience beyond the usability level, to address people’s needs for self-esteem and self-actualization. With this goal in mind, a generative research approach using participatory design methods was applied, focusing on allowing people to creatively engage in the early phases of design development and aiming to extract people’s latent needs, emotions, and imaginations. Participatory design methods have most often been tried and tuned in Western cultures (Sleeswijk Visser et al. 2005); however, they are rarely practiced in Asia. The research was conducted in China; therefore, this paper also shares some hands-on experiences about how participants from China performed, thus providing experiential insights for researchers interested in performing participatory design research in China.
