Abstract
The study to be covered is a portion of a larger research project conducted by Dr. Susan Pinney, Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati, Department of Environmental Health, College of Medicine, which focuses on Breast Cancer and the Environmental Impact on Puberty (a.k.a. Growing Up Female 2). This research lead to a sub-study which involved administering surveys and collecting the urine, blood and serum of girls 6-9 years old to measure the level of analytes for exposure to environmental chemicals and to determine their influences on these girls’ pubertal status. Biomonitoring measurements used in this thesis were compared to the levels found for participants in the NHANES study. NHANES is a series of surveys conducted by CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). In the sampled communities, many children are exposed to chemicals directly or indirectly; therefore it’s very important to minimize the risks for children who are the most vulnerable in term of exposures to these analytes. These children are in contact with diverse chemicals from the same or different sources in their communities and from manufacturing wastes and finished products including food. It is important to educate the population especially families with children, to recognize potential exposures, and to have the knowledge about potential chemicals in the materials that are used regularly, including nutritional and food items.
