Abstract
Understanding the mechanics behind tearing of soft tissues is critical to developing applications such as surgical simulation. In particular, accurate computational models are required not only to capture the nonlinearity of soft tissues but also its tearing characteristics. In this current study, cohesive zone modeling is used to model tearing in soft materials. The tearing characteristics of processed meat products (PMP) are studied. Because of its uniform thickness and easy availability, this is a good candidate soft material. Uniaxial tension and tearing experiments are performed to characterize the mode-I tearing response of PMP. The bulk response of PMP is modeled as an incompressible hyperelastic material. Two cohesive zone models are developed for the tearing response at quasistatic strain rates and implemented in the nite element software ABAQUS. Parametric studies are carried out to analyze the eects of the cohesive zone parameters on the overall load-displacement result of the material. An automated nonlinear optimization approach is used to extract the bulk and the cohesive zone parameters. The bulk material parameters are extracted from the uniaxial tension data whereas the cohesive zone parameters are extracted from the tearing data. Results show that the proposed hyperelastic model and the two cohesive zone models are able to accurately characterize the uniaxial tension and the tearing experiments respectively. Such computational models can be used for applications like surgical simulation and sports injury where tissue tearing is involved.
