Abstract
Many ethnic minorities in need of mental health treatment fail to receive needed services. One factor contributing to disparities in mental health utilization is beliefs regarding the etiology of mental illness. In order to help mental health professionals understand culturally diverse mental health attributions, this study utilized a mixed methods design to create a measure of mental health attributions valid for various cultural groups. The study was conducted in three phases. Phase 1: Thirty-four adults (24% African American, 18% Asian, 26% Latino, and 32% White) in seven focus groups generated attributions in response to mental health scenarios. Seven themes were identified using grounded theory and six scenarios were chosen to be included in the measure, the Mental Health Cultural Health Attributions Questionnaire (MH-CHAQ). Phase 2: A sample of 313 participants (39.1% African American, 2.0% as Asian, 11.6% as Latino, 45.4% as White and 2.0% as “other.”) completed the MH-CHAQ. Exploratory factor analysis indicated separate models for adult and child scenarios and models were extracted from each. In both child and adult models, four factors were identified: Situational, Inconsistent with Modern Concepts, Dispositional, and Interpersonal and Environmental Stress. Phase 3: The validity of the MH-CHA was examined. Evidence of convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed using measures of mental health beliefs. Moreover, the ability of the MH-CHAQ to predict attitudes towards seeking mental health and assess cultural differences in attributions supported criterion validity.
