2012, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Architecture has always a had a special relationship with art; it equally relates to art and technology. At the beginning of 20th century architecture was strongly influenced by the developments in the both spheres. It was enriched by advances in technology, such as structural steel, reinforced concrete, elevators, etc. Yet, it is art movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Suprematism, Non-Objective Art, Abstractionism and Abstract Expressionism and many others that laid the ground in bringing about the most significant changes into the sphere of Architecture. This thesis researches the effort of Wasilly Kandinsky to categorize and develop the universal theory of the abstract geometrical language described in his seminal theoretical texts “Point and Line to Plane” and “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”. The thesis tries to practically apply the Kandinsky’s theories in the development of architectural form. The thesis attempts to bridge the laws of Abstract- Expressionism and Architecture. The thesis argues that the laws of None-Objective Art are valid for architectural composition and thus can be successfully applied to architectural design.
