Design and Optimization of a Throttle and Restrictor for Formula SAE

Lindley, Dustin

Abstract Details

2012, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering and Applied Science: Mechanical Engineering.
In this thesis, a new throttle and restrictor design for the Univeristy of Cincinnati Formula SAE team, Bearcat Motorsports, is described. The design was chosen based on both computation and experiment, and motivated by real-world data. An inexpensive digital flow bench was developed and produced using a simple microcontroller board. The flow bench was used to evaluate a number of design choices. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed at various stages in the design. Simulation was used to evaluate two candidate throttle configurations. An automated optimization tool combining CFD with particle swarm optimization was built and used to produce a number of candidate designs. These design candidates were physically implemented and tested on the flow bench, and the results compared with results from simulation.
