Abstract
The term Hexameron derives its name from the Greek roots hexa-, meaning "six", and (h)emer(a), meaning "day" and refers either to the six days of Creation themselves or to the Biblical treatise on them. Based on the account of the creation of the world in the book of Genesis chapter 1, the first three days of creation are claimed as separation: day one separated the light from the darkness; day two the waters above the sky from waters below it; day three the land from the water, the sea. These separations are filled with other creations in the next three days: in day four the light and darkness are filled with the sun, the moon, and the stars; in day five the ocean and sky are filled with marine life and birds; and in day six the land is filled with land animals, a man and a woman. I thought this framework would be a perfect structure for my doctoral dissertation piece which would reflect the journey of both studying composition and building an intimate relationship with God during my graduate studies. The account of creation in the book of Genesis chapter 1 employs a repetitious structure of divine fulfillment such as "God said," And "God saw that it was good,"and "And there was evening, and there was morning, the (x)th days for each of the six days of Creation. I translated these repeating verses into musical gestures which open and close each of the six sections in the piece. The seventh day which is reserved for Sabbath, and so is not counted in the Hexameron is intended to begin when the piece ends.
