Physicians' Perceptions of the Elements, Barriers, and Availability of Personalized Medicine

Abstract Details

2013, MS, University of Cincinnati, Medicine: Genetic Counseling.
Background: Personalized medicine can be thought of as a way to individualize health care based on an individual's characteristics in order to achieve better prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. Since the completion of the Human Genome Project and with advancements in knowledge about genetics, new tools have been developed to individualize health care. Implementation of these tools, such as genetic testing and pharmacogenomics, has the potential to greatly advance personalized medicine. Assessment of physicians' perceptions of personalized medicine is important in order to understand the implementation of personalized medicine in clinical settings. This study examines physicians' perceptions of personalized medicine and its availability across racial groups. Methods: Study subjects consisted of physicians at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and UC Health. An electronic survey was emailed to physicians. Wilcoxon rank sum analysis was performed on all data. Results: The overall response rate was 8.9%. Physicians identified family history, drug-drug interaction alerts in medical records, and biomarker measurements to guide therapy as the most essential elements of personalized medicine. Racial discrimination and genetic discrimination were the lowest rated barriers. Perceived availability was associated with perceptions of the relevance, delivery, elements, and barriers of personalized medicine. Conclusion: Overall, restricted familiarity with the elements, concerns about specific barriers, and perceptions of availability across racial groups may inhibit the implementation of personalized medicine in clinical practice.
