Typologies of Female Offenders: A Latent Class Analysis Using the Women''s Risk Needs Assessment

Abstract Details

, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Criminal Justice.
Historically, male offenders have been the focus of criminal justice research and policy as they comprise a substantial majority of the offender population. The study of offender typologies is no exception – most studies have been conducted on all-male or primarily male samples. However, the number of women offenders involved in the criminal justice system has rapidly increased in recent years, and, as a result, women offenders can no longer be ignored. While there have been some examinations of female offender typologies, including the work of Daly (1992), Simpson et al (2008), and Brennan et al (forthcoming), many of these studies suffer from significant limitations. This dissertation addresses these shortcomings and augments the literature by testing for the existence of distinct types of female offenders among a large sample of women offenders using a methodologically sound quantitative analytic method and a full set of theoretically-relevant variables drawn from an empirically-verified gender-responsive risk needs assessment tool. The study also advances the literature by explicitly examining how female offender types are related to serious misconducts among a sample of incarcerated women. The analysis supports a three class solution, with each of the three types being defined by a unique constellation of characteristics. The similarities of each of the classes found to previous female offender types are discussed. The observed relationship between class membership and misconducts is complex and merits further investigation. The implications of these findings for criminological theory as well as for the treatment and management of female offenders are also explored.
