Abstract Details

2013, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Romance Languages and Literatures.
My research intends to analyze the poetic works of four poets from four different Latin-American national literary traditions to better understand the way in which their literary field works as a means to classify and compare them. From this, I hope to be able to identify a series of transnational constants in the construction and evolution of modern Latin-American poetry. My investigation aims to prove the following hypothesis: The process of "canonization" of the poetic works of a determined author are dependent on three factors: 1) the aesthetic-ideological direction of its work, 2) the negotiation between this direction and the concept of taste developed in its particular (national) and general – this is, what is already established when the author writes his work –tradition, and 3) how this poetic work inserts itself in the literary fields of its moment, or of posterior moments (this is the case of poets whose works get late visibility). I propose that these three factors are inseparable and operate simultaneously, being the most decisive influence on the "canonization" process of an author or literary work. My intention is to identify constants that go from the macro level of national consciousness down to the micro level of general literary tradition. For these reasons I have decided to focus my studies on works by the following four poets: Gonzalo Rojas (Chile, 1917), Ali Chumacero (Mexico, 1918-2010), Fernando Charry Lara (Colombia, 1920-2004), and Juan Sanchez Pelaez (Venezuela, 1922- 2003), all of whom share several features that make their grouping and comparison clearly relevant in understanding their particular literary fields. Although my work is not the first that will address literary fields within the Spanish language, it will be the first that seeks to identify and codify a series of transnational constants. If successful, the results of my work could serve as a point of reference in the study of Latin-American poetic traditions, and their related literary fields.
