Creating Secured Web Framework for Mobile Devices

Abstract Details

2013, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering and Applied Science: Computer Science.
As smart phones have evolved and consumer expectation risen, there has been an exponential growth in mobile applications, including both business and gaming. We also see this happening in various disciplines, notably in health care and financial industries. Not all applications run native - that is, application may be running on a specific mobile operating system and using its hardware resources. On the contrary, smart phones and tablets now have complete support of full-fledged browser with access to Document Object Model, Cascading Style Sheet and JavaScript. This thesis concentrates on the mobile development using web technologies and harnessing an existing web framework available for desktop browsers and implementing it for mobile devices. This thesis specifically evaluates STRUTS 2 - a popular second-generation web framework and provides enhancements in the areas of authentication and authorization, encryption support, Integration with IBatis – object relational mapping to database, Tiles – a view rendering framework integration. In the course of supporting these activities, this thesis provides design and implementation of an EMR (Electronic Medical Record) used by physicians, nurses, patient care technician and dietician in a dialysis center setting. The EMR provides a workflow for a patient coming for a dialysis treatment, accounts for patient demographics, physicians permanent Order, and Standing Orders. The EMR provides visit tracking for each patient capturing in-center and home medications intake and records workflow data providing dialysis treatment before and after the procedure. Although substantial work has been done for applications using a desktop browser, just few operations have been implemented on mobile devices. The work demonstrates the need for having a unified framework that can provide the same business services to mobile devices available for desktop browsers resulting in quicker products to market. From a development perspective it provides a single code base for mobile devices and desktop browsers, shorter development cycle and a cost effective product in terms of functionalities and testing resources.
