Bridging the Gap: Connecting Food and the Urban Environment

Schmidt, Katherine

Abstract Details

2014, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Throughout history, humans have lived in rural areas, with the earth sustaining the necessities of food, water, and shelter. As populations increase, the built environment, the human habitat, has grown significantly. Although agriculture revolution has allowed for the farming industry to support the ever growing population, the advantage is shrinking with time. The built environment has grown large enough to start to create micro-climates, also known as urban-heat islands. The natural habitat is becoming more and more interrupted with land used to grow food. Rain forests are being cut down and animals are going extinct at exponential rates. The hard, distinct line between the built environment and the natural environment is causing harm to both.
