Abstract
The interplay of light and form is one of the purest distillations of architecture in both its theoretical context and in the fundamental human understanding of the built and natural environment. Yet contemporary architecture’s persistent emphasis on novel form-making largely fails to encompass basic issues of human engagement. This thesis will explore the phenomenology of light, the discourse of how light presences both itself and all other aspects of building in relation to the occupants daily lives. The phenomenological understanding of our being-in-the-world means that we have always-already been with light in our daily lives, an interpretation that is critical of the objectified understanding of light as quantifiable performance criterion. To understand a more authentic mode of engagement that architecture is capable of, this thesis explains the work of phenomenologists, theorists, and architects, as well as lighting designers, all of whom explore the poetic meaning found through dwelling and place.
