Abstract
Conventionally organic light emitting diodes (OLED) are fabricated on glass substrate and a vast majority of literature on high efficiency OLEDs is present. However, there is a growing amount of literature that demonstrates OLED flexibility, which is one of the biggest advantage that OLEDs have over conventional light emitting technology. The ability of OLEDs being completely flexible and biodegradable can be best exploited by fabricating it on a substrate that exhibits both of the above mentioned qualities. This research focuses on highly efficient OLEDs using a phosphorescent emitter fabricated onto transparent cellulose substrates. These cellulose substrates were synthesized by dissolution of cellulose in an organic solvent (di-methyl-acetamide) at elevated temperature (165°C) in the presence of a salt (LiCl). The transparent cellulose substrate has excellent properties in terms of transmission (Avg. 85%) and surface roughness (Avg. 4.4 nm) which enabled the fabrication of OLEDs. Current and luminous emission efficiency as high as 47 cd/A and 20 lm/W were achieved along with a maximum brightness of 10,000 cd/m2. The capability of fabricating OLEDs onto cellulose substrate makes it an excellent choice for low cost, flexible and biodegradable displays in the future.
