Abstract Details

2014, DMA, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music: Piano.
Joan Tower (b. 1938) has become one of the most renowned, popular, and sought-after of American composers for her bold and energetic music, which is rich in timbre. Reflecting her experience as pianist of the Da Capo Chamber Players for fifteen years, Tower has composed two piano concertos to date: Homage to Beethoven (1985) and Rapids, (1996), which she revised as Still/Rapids (2013). Departing from the serialism that dominated her early style, these two concertos chart her development of a mature musical style, while the revision of her second concerto represents her late style. Scholarly interest about Joan Tower and her works has increased during the past fifteen years, but no one has yet studied Tower’s piano concertos in the context of her stylistic development. Through a comparative style study, I explore the changes in Tower’s compositional style as evinced in these piano concertos, tracing how her aesthetic has developed. My methodology was to compare the stylistic elements between the piano concertos, and between the concertos and representative works of Tower’s during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s.
