My thesis focuses on the short stories of six contemporary Argentine women writers: Luisa Axpe, Liliana Diaz Mindurry, Fernanda Garcia Curten, Paola Kaufmann, Mariana Enriquez, and Samanta Schweblin. Although these narratives have not been addressed by literary criticism, they are generally regarded as fantastic by editorial press releases and book reviews. However, here I demonstrate that they include procedures that pertain to other literary realms as well, among these the marvellous realism, the absurd, and the grotesque. Therefore, these narratives resort to multiple textual strategies and motifs, forming a “hybrid literature” that escapes univocal categorization. This research evaluates the relationship between those realms and the fantastic. Moreover, it proposes a revision of the theoretical framework that studies the unreal, to open up new perspectives to analyze these diverse narrative forms.
