Abstract
Wireless body area networks (WBANs) or Wireless Body Area Sensor Networks (WBASNs) address remote health monitoring. Sensor nodes of a WBAN are characterized by either invasive deployment wherein they remain implanted inside the body or non-invasive deployment wherein they are attached on the body surface. Vital body parameters such body temperature, pressure, insulin levels, etc. are monitored by these sensors. In addition, a coordinator or sink node is used which collects health information sent to it by the sensors and this constitutes an interface for other networks or medical staff. An important concern here is the issue of network topology reorganization because of movement of body parts that makes sensor nodes appear to be mobile nodes in the network. We present a network topology reorganization scheme for WBANs that is based on a tree based routing scheme. In a tree based routing scheme, the sensor nodes form a tree topology to communicate with the coordinator using a number of hops. In each hop, a node communicates the data with its immediate parent, and in this manner, the data reaches the coordinator in finite hops. Here, the position of the sensor nodes placed on the parts of the body which are relatively mobile, for example, limbs (arms or legs) changes with respect to other nodes. This results in disruptions in communication or deterioration in the received signal quality and therefore there is a need to reorganize the network topology. We provide a solution to reorganize the network topology when it has been determined that a sensor node has sufficiently moved from its original position that the network topology would now require to be reorganized. The proposed scheme ensures freedom from loop formation and reduces network repair time. It also accommodates dynamic changes in network topology and thereby enables the network to scale in size by making provisions for newer nodes to join in future. Results obtained in this thesis are summarized and future work pointed at very clearly.
