Recent introduction of larger hot-rolled angles, referred to as jumbo angles in this paper, has widened possible applications of top-and-seat angle (TSA) connections. Gains in connection strength and stiffness by using jumbo angles are expected. Prying action is unique to TSA and other similar connections, and a prying model needed to be selected as most appropriate for jumbo angles. Also, stiffness models for TSA connections were evaluated for their expected ability to predict jumbo TSA connection stiffness. A set of connections were designed for a range of beam depths, several of which were designed to be full strength and fully restrained. In lieu of experiments, finite element (FE) models in Abaqus/Standard of several connections were analyzed to evaluate the adequacy of strength and stiffness equations. Four FE models replicated a top or seat angle component in tension. The prying model used in design proved to be most accurate for the jumbo angle models. Four full-scale FE models were created next to validate the whole design procedure. Three models were designed to be full strength, two of which were also designed to be fully restrained. Strength design was adequate and conservative for all models. Stiffness may have been overestimated, which may be attributed to differences in where rotation is measured and difficulty predicting connection slip. Jumbo angles demonstrated improvements in TSA connection strength (full strength W24×55 beam) and possible improvements in stiffness.
