Abstract
A study was conducted on the effectiveness of synthetic turf field drainage systems to infiltrate and temporarily detain storm water runoff. The drainage performance of a synthetic turf soccer field was simulated using the combination of HYDRUS 2D computer software and the USEPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). HYDRUS 2D was used to model precipitation percolating through a 2-dimensional soil domain into perforated drainage pipes. The output of HYDRUS 2D was ported into SWMM to numerically simulate the flow through the subsurface pipe network to the outfall from the field. The computer model was calibrated with field measurements (rainfall depth and rate, outflow rate) taken in 2012 during several storm events at the Northern Kentucky University Soccer Stadium in Highland Heights Kentucky. The calibrated model displayed excellent agreement with subsequent runoff events measured at the NKU field. Simulation results were used to investigate whether or not the classic rational formula was an appropriate tool for predicting peak flows from synthetic turf fields. It was determined that a single unique “C factor” could not adequately account for the complicated dynamic response of the synthetic turf drainage system. Finally, it is shown that an accurate physically based model of storm drainage from synthetic turf fields will improve the cost effectiveness and the hydraulic efficiency of synthetic turf playing fields.
